About...

Cheers! It's Mike Chapple at the bar

WE love our pubs and our drink here on Merseyside. And even though there are those who will be keen to deny it, drinking culture and the inspiration it provides was an important ingredient in Liverpool winning the Capital of Culture nomination. Hopefully by reading this weekly missive those who would beg to differ may begin to understand why. Cheers!

West Cheshire Beer Festival July 21

Posted by Mike Chapple on July 23, 2007 10:48 AM

That thingy that’s hot and yellow reappeared.

Ah yes, the sun.

Rose and Crown, Bebington, July 14

Posted by Mike Chapple on July 16, 2007 5:42 PM

Yours truly needed cheering up this week.
The monsoon rains had soaked through the shoes causing a severe case of trenchfoot and further aggravating a pickled onion-sized bunion on the right foot.

It's no smoke! July 7

The golden age of Viz Comic may be over.
But in its heyday it came up with some magnificently innovative and downright offensive slogans for their T-shirts and posters.
The favourite though, by a quick half, was the picture of a sozzled smoker, a fag between leering lips and with pint in hand, declaring: “Doctors say, stay in the pink with ciggies in drink.”

The Admiral, Rock Ferry. June 30

Posted by Mike Chapple on July 3, 2007 12:59 PM

A sleeping giant in a forgotten land.
That’s The Admiral a marvellous pub brimming with maritime history.
It looks out over the Mersey amid the leafy tumbledown splendour of Rock Park and adjacent to the old pier served the residents of this once well to do area.
Duuuur, hence the name Rock Ferry.
